MOTHER’S DAY

5/14/2006 Brother Bill Moseley

The famous writer, Julia Ward Howe, first suggested Mother’s Day in America. Anna Jarvis, born is 1864 in Grafton, West Virginia, is considered the real founder of Mother’s Day. A Mother’s Day service was held at her request in Grafton by a local preacher on May 12, 1907. She began to write letters for support of a national Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. By 1909, almost every state in the America was observing Mother’s Day. On May 9th, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring the second Sunday in May as a national Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day comes but once a year, but my Dad taught me that everyday is Mother’s Day. He taught my sister and I to respect our mother from the time we could understand, and we’ve tried to do just that throughout her lifetime. There have been times of disagreement, arguments, laughter, and sadness, but still there is the respect for her that all mothers should have.

The Bible places great respect on the mothers of the world, and, I might add, responsibility. “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praised her.” (Pr. 31:28) But respect is something earned. It’s not something placed upon someone without just cause. “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” ( Pr. 31:10) Andrew Dickson White once wrote, “If the time would ever come when women are not Christians and houses are not homes, then we will have lost the chief cornerstone on which civilization rests.” Sad to say that we are now living in that day. Many women are not raising their children up in a Christian home, and we see the result everyday it seems. I can’t help but wonder what those children’s life at home was like who killed their fellow students in Columbine High School several years ago. Many children have no respect for their mother, and it is manifested in their loss of respect for the community in which they live, and the blame has to be at home.

Abraham Lincoln once said; “No man is poor who has had a godly mother.” All should cherish and love their mother, for with great sacrifice, many bring their children up in this world. Don’t take her for granite. She is the only one you will every have. When she is gone, if she is still living, you may say she was the best friend you ever had. I once heard a fellow say that about his dad, and I can understand where he was coming from. Godly parents both mother and father, should have our respect.

As my own mother lives out the remaining years of her life, I want her to know how appreciative I am that she raised my sister and I in a Christian home. She certainly has my respect. I can only say, “Thanks Mom. You’ve been a real Mother to me.”
