The Triumphal Entry

John 12:12-13 “On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna; blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.”

This “triumphal entry” into Jerusalem was unlike any that had went before him with their pomp and ceremony. He did not enter upon a great stallion with a great marching army behind and all around him. He came into Jerusalem alone, upon a donkey with the cheering crowds spreading branches of palm trees before him. No, this was not the triumphal entry of a great king, but it was fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” (Zechariah 9:9)

When latter asked by Pilate, “Art thou a king then?” Jesus answered, “Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.” (John 18:3) Yes, he is King. Maybe not in the style that man has grown and expected, but he is King, King of Kings, and Lord of Lord.

No, the “triumphal entry” of Christ was a road of sorrow, the beginning of his passion for us that led to the cross of Calvary. He came to Jerusalem to die for the sins of the world. He came to offer himself as the sacrificial lamb of God that we might obtain salvation. This entry was triumphal in that judgment commenced upon the world, and the prince of this world was cast out. (John 12:31) No longer would Satan have control. Yes, Christ was triumphal. Thank God.
