New Every Morning, the Mercies of God

Lamentations 3:21-23 “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” The Lord has a right to destroy each one of us because of our sin. We do not deserve the goodness of God, but because of his tender mercies, we are forgiven through the blood of Jesus Christ. His compassion for His creation does not end with the sacrifice of His Son. It continues daily.

If you will, these few verses include the entire gospel and its benefits to us. I can recall nearly every sin committed in this life. They are many and ever before me. Yet the Lord has put them out of his sight. Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am he that blotted out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” Because of this, there is hope.

Mercy is defined by Webster as “a deposition to forgive or to be kind”, and therefore we can rejoice. Psalms 85:2 “Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.” The covering of sin is the atonement paid for by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. God’s mercy provided salvation by the offering of His Son. This is the only way to satisfy God’s law. God’s law states that the wages of sin is death. Since Jesus paid the price, we can be forgiven, thus setting aside the condemnation that was ever before us.

And it is not just a one time event. It is not something that occurred years ago, but it continues afresh each day. We can all look back to the day of our salvation, but His mercies are renewed every morning. Every day we awake, God’s mercies continue. With Satan ever before us, with the temptations that could easily beset us, and destroy us, we need His mercy to provide the grace to get through another day of life. Because of Christ, and for His sake, those mercies are renewed. Thank God for His mercies.
