Independence Day 07-01-2007 Brother Bill Moseley The celebration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July the 4th was a result of a committee of the 2nd Continental Congress of 1776 made up of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman. These men were to draft a declaration of the revolution that would be suitable to the establishment of the United States as a new nation independent of Great Britain. The result was the Declaration of Independence of July 4th, 1776 at a meeting of the Continental Congress in Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Today, we celebrate this day as a national holiday to commemorate the writing of this document and the establishment of this nation independent of Great Britain. Many communities across this great nation have parades, family picnics, displays of the American flag, fireworks, and decorations of red, white, and blue. Although spiritual in nature, the Christian Community celebrates a day that was the result of the work of our savior, our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Day of Pentecost. After his death on the cross at Calvary, his burial, his resurrection three days later, and after showing himself alive with many infallible proofs and speaking of many things concerning the kingdom of God during a forty days period, He instructed his followers, consisting of 120 men, to assemble themselves in the upper room at Jerusalem unto they were endued with power from on high. The result was the promise of the Father, the baptism of the Holy Ghost. All that were assembled in the upper room began to proclaim the gospel, Peter the chief spokesman. Many were converted. 3000 were added that day. A new nation was established, spiritual in nature, but as real as any earthly nation with a government, Jesus Christ as head, the principal leader. |
