A People Prepared for the Lord

12-24-06  Brother Bill Moseley

Luke 1:5-17

The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is “the reason for the season” we now celebrate, but events leading to this miraculous birth help to seal the meaning and importance of His birth.

No doubt, fear came upon the priest, Zacharias, when an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in the temple and told him his wife would bare a son. This child would cause many to rejoice. This child would grow into adulthood and would be great in the sight of the Lord. He would neither drink wine or strong drink, but would be filled with the Spirit of God. Many of Israel would turn to the Lord their God and become a people prepared to meet the Lord.

The birth of this child would set in motion the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Zacharias, filled with the Holy ghost, prophesied after the birth of his son, John, and said that God has now “visited and redeemed his people, and hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.“ (Luke 1:68,69) Jesus would prepare a people to meet God. Jesus would bring forth the plan made from before the foundation of the world. Jesus would bring about the plan of salvation that would redeem mankind back into fellowship with God himself.

The angel Gabriel came to a virgin named Mary, espoused to a man named Joseph with the announcement that she was highly favored with God, and would conceive in her womb one that would be called the Son of God. Mary, willing to be barrier of the gift of God, could only rejoice and thank the God of her Saviour. Her humbleness was expressed in her words to Elisabeth, but great was her praise of her God. ”For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.” (Luke 1:49, 50) This includes you and me. Aren’t you grateful for the birth of Christ? Christ is why you and I can rejoice, also. Thank Him! Thank Him! We have hope.
