Stedfast, Unmoveable

04-20-08 Bro. Bill Moseley

1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” The words of Paul should ring a bell to let us know that time is running out for the lost. As the church, we are the lights of the world as a city sat upon a hill that cannot be hidden from view. While many of the beloved brethren of the church may be focused on the things of the world, many are going out into eternity without Christ in their life. Our work as the church is to proclaim the gospel of Christ to the lost. Paul reminds us that we should remain firmly fixed upon the work he has given us to do. He proclaims that we all need to have the determination to see our work in Christ through to the end because our labor will not be in vain. Many could be saved.

The work of Christ is not subject to change either. Once Christ began his ministry, he followed through. Now, the work of Christ, to seek and save that, which is lost, is dependent on us. Christ was obedient to the cross because he knew our salvation, and subsequent labor in the Lord, depended on the shedding of his own blood. There can be no change in that mission. We cannot be idle. We cannot say within ourselves, “Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” Many in the church are like this man who did all that was necessary for the future, but then decided to relax, sit back, and take life easy, letting someone else do the work. We have been granted certain abilities that require constant attention and fine-tuning to become proficient. The more we exercise that God given gift, the better at it we become. Every believer is a worker for Christ. Remember the parable of the man who gave his servants certain talents before going away into a far country? The scripture goes on to say that this man returned, as our Lord will someday, and reckoned with them, as Christ will with us. To each one that doubled what had been given to him, there was great joy. The lord said unto them, “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” To the one that hid his talent, the lord said, “Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” To be sure, your labor for the Lord is not in vain. You make think it goes un-noticed, but God records what is done and will reward accordingly.
