The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. PS 145:9 We place great importance in being good. Children are constantly reminded to "be good". We recommend "good" places to eat and good books to read. We welcome "good" news. The fact of the matter is "good" is a state of mind. Young children know neither to be good or bad - they just know to do what comes natural to them. We decide if their actions are good or bad. Food you call good, I may find disgusting and books you like may hold no appeal for me. So then why is "good" so important to us? Because "good" implies many deeper meanings. Read over the next few words and with each word think of a person or thing you associate with it. Tasty, nourishing, fast, courteous, knowledgeable, refreshing, careful, powerful, loving, entertaining, restful, protective. You may have thought of a "good" burger that is tasty, or a "good" father that is loving, or a "good" computer that is fast. Whatever you thought of, these attributes made them "good" to you. Throughout the Bible we read of the goodness of God. He is the author of goodness. Or in other words God knows how to provide unto us what we need. Just in the 23rd Psalm alone we see where God provides rest, nourishment, sustenance, restoration, guidance, comfort, companionship, protection, gladness, refreshing, goodness, and mercy. No wonders David starts the verse by saying The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. I can’t think of anyone who would not welcome these blessings in their life. These blessings were not for David alone but are available to all. But to be able to enjoy His good to the fullest you must first be of a like heart and mind. There is not enough ink nor paper to tell of the goodness of God, but as is often said -it’s better felt than told. I realize my good is founded in Him, and my good is modeled after Him. I also know because I live in Him -Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
